casts out fear

In the orphanage I worked at this past summer, there was a flag hung flat against the wall of a tiny room between the kitchen and bathroom. On it, the simple words “PERFECT LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR.” I looked at it almost every time I walked through there. And then just now, a song by Garage Voice came on and brought back that memory… Over and over again, “perfect love casts out fear.”

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. [1 John 4:15-19]

  1. I guess I missed that flag while we were there. And yet, it’s such a perfect place for it. It was hung in a home where children had no hope. But because of the perfect love of God, they have nothing to fear; they get a chance at a new life.

Thanks for this post. God’s Word is powerful stuff.
