I learned some new things this summer. And I was reminded of some things I knew. Here they are.

Loft beds are never enjoyable to sleep in.
A tiny kitchen is better than no kitchen.
Reading an interesting book on the subway makes it likely people will talk to you.
There are many times you will be the minority in New York City.
The Brooklyn Bridge is great to walk across. Even greater is the park near it on the Brooklyn side, Empire Fulton Ferry State Park. I hope someone proposes to me there some day.
Free events are in abundance — just know where to look.
God is the light in this darkness, the hope to the hopeless and the peace to the restless.
Smile.
Make friends at work quickly. Days will go by more quickly.
If you think to yourself, “don’t forget this cell phone/shopping bag/umbrella/jacket you are setting down,” it is inevitable that you will leave it behind.
Do work you really care about.
Walking to and from work is a good time for prayer, thinking and music-listening.
Not deciding what you want to do in the future is so freeing.
Spend money to make memories, not on clothes.
Times Square will always be crowded.
Be strong and courageous. The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Three things…
1) Watch Mad Men on AMC when it premieres Aug. 16. It’s the third season, and if you haven’t seen it before, you may be a bit behind, but you’ll still be hooked right away. I promise.
2) Make your 1960s self at Mad Men Yourself. 1960s Natalie is seen above…
3) Check out House Beautiful’s Mad Men features on the home page of the Web site. I worked hard to pull together two of those. Lots of digging through archives… Participate in the photo war! We need more votes.
Today is my last day as a House Beautiful and Country Living Web intern. I’ll highlight more of my favorites from the magazines in coming days.
I was never that into interior design, until I started working with images of beautiful rooms every day. Now I’ll never be able to let myself have an ugly home. So, as a tribute to my summer spent at House Beautiful and Country Living, here are some of my favorite rooms:
A mostly white kitchen with touches of yellow, aqua and gray — my favorite color combination lately:
I love huge photographs above beds and all the light blues and greens used here:
“Casual Style in a Long Island Home”
Interesting light fixtures are my favorite:
“Is John Willey’s Bright Design Right For You?”
A coat rack in a bathroom is really a clever idea:
“A Home Makeover With Antiques”
Great pattern in the stained glass repeated on the floor… and creeping up onto the wall? Awesome:
Realizing I don’t blog about work much. Well, here’s a little taste. A game I play at work frequently called “Find the Caption in an Excel Document Full of HTML Coding.”
Really, though, I love how this job allows me to use my eye for detail. I’m a pro at finding words that aren’t bolded and should be. And I love the Web for its ever-changing qualities.
House Beautiful’s biggest event is Kitchen of the Year. I spent my morning “assisting” (watching) video shoots with the Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten (she looks strikingly similar to my mom!), whose kitchen was recreated on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center. I didn’t make it early enough to see her give Al Roker the tour.
Beyond Ina introducing herself to me, a highlight included capturing a moth that had made its way into the kitchen. I think my boss said something like, “Now that’s a Midwest girl.”
I’m going to a “gala” at the kitchen on Wednesday night. Not sure what that will hold for me.
Also, Oprah was in the cafe at work today! I conveniently took my lunch break right when I heard she was down there.

I highly doubt I’ll ever be as crafty and cute as the majority of Country Living readers. But this is neat and doable. Next time I buy tulips, I’m going to turn their petals back. Genius.
Here it is. Also short. And my name isn’t on it because I didn’t write the image captions — just the bit below the images. Check out my Apartment Therapy book write-up.

I get to be House Beautiful magazine’s summer Web intern! I’m so truly excited and blessed.

In the meantime, check out their neat gallery.

Another superb issue of Mankind Mag. I’ve been blessed to be part of it… Buy the issue. It’s cheap and comes as an interactive PDF. We’re saving paper here, folks.
I had two articles in this month.
First: Feature on Amir Fallah. Publisher of BEAUTIFUL/DECAY magazine and a great artist. The theme of forts running through his work captivated me.
Excerpt from Fortnotes:
Nighttime, sheets, couch cushions, clothespins, flashlight. All the makings for a good childhood fort. Add a few lamps, some rope and a professional aesthetic and you’ve got yourself a fort built for a king… specifically Amir Fallah, that is. And trust us— there’s nothing childlike about it…
Second: Interview with Vance Lessard. Photographer under the name 2 AM.
Excerpt from two a.m.:
Vance Lessard — aka the power behind 2am Photography — is the master of nighttime photo capturing. His love for those wee hours when the sun is down was piqued early on by the lat- 50s childrens’ book Sam and the Firefly. Just as Sam the owl comes out when the moon is up, so does Vance. Now all grown up, his first serious attempts at nighttime photography take place along East Broadway in Tempe, Arizona.
